Lighting can be used to accent an area for aesthetic value, and in this case as shown in the photo, for safety as well. The downlighting from these recesses lights adds ambiance to the stair well, and when left on at night, offers an element of safety by illuminating an otherwise dark stairwell. When used this way, the lights can be put on a dimmer switch so the area is illuminated with a gentle wash of light instead of a full blast of bright light which may be hard to adjust to when waking in the middle of the night.
Placing recessed lights in a flat ceiling will look great, adding ceiling accents such as this tray ceiling will add more depth and design appeal and will add a level of elegance a flat ceiling just cannot compete with. Building a tray in an existing ceiling is accomplished by dropping the ceiling around the area you want to appear as recessed, so design possibilities are limitless. It takes a bit of careful design and measurement to make sure everything is excatly where you want it to be, but it is not overly difficult. Besides, how often do you get to draw on the ceiling? Once the design is laid out, construction can begin.
